Horizontal Flow-Pack Packaging Machines

A flow-pack machine — a horizontal form fill seal machine or flow wrapper — wraps a product, a group of products or a tray in a continuous film tube and seals both ends. DOKTEK FoodTech supplies flow-pack machines configured for bakery, confectionery, fresh produce, trays and frozen products.

Configuration is selected according to product, packaging format and required capacity. Machine speed, dimensions and price are stated in the quotation once the product and the pack have been reviewed.

How a Flow-Pack Machine Works

  1. 01

    Infeed

  2. 02

    Film unwind

  3. 03

    Folding box

  4. 04

    Fin seal

  5. 05

    End seal + cut

  6. 06

    Discharge

Products travel horizontally into a film tube formed by the folding box; fin wheels seal it underneath (or on top), and the end-seal jaws close and cut each pack.

Machine Configuration

  1. 01

    Infeed conveyor

Pusher chain with flights sized to the product, a manual loading belt or an automatic feeder that spaces products coming from the line.

  2. 02

    Film unwind and folding box

Reel holder, tension control and a folding box sized to the product cross-section.

  3. 03

    Fin sealing

Heated fin wheels make the longitudinal seal; temperature and pressure are set per film.

  4. 04

    End sealing

Rotary cross-sealing jaws for speed, or box-motion jaws that stay with the pack longer for thicker films and gas-tight seals.

  5. 05

    Registration and controls

Servo drives, print-mark registration, no-product/no-bag logic and recipes on the HMI.

  6. 06

    Discharge

Outfeed belt to checkweighing, labelling or case packing.

Suitable Products

Typical flow-pack products

  • Bars, biscuits and bakery products
  • Confectionery and single portions
  • Whole vegetables such as cucumbers and peppers, singly or in groups
  • Trays of fresh produce, mushrooms or berries
  • Frozen portions and multipacks
  • Cheese blocks and similar solid products

Usually better on another machine

  • Loose pieces dosed by weight — vertical bagger with a weigher
  • Powders and liquids
  • Rigid trays that need a sealed lidding film — tray sealer

Film on Top or Film Below

In a standard flow wrapper the film comes from above and the fin seal is made underneath the pack. For soft, loose or irregular products — fresh produce, trays of vegetables, products that must not be pushed — a film-below configuration lets the product sit on the film from the start and puts the fin seal on top.

Packaging Materials and Modified Atmosphere

Flow packs use heat-sealable films — OPP, laminated and metallised structures, and mono-material films — chosen for barrier and appearance. Cold-seal films are used where heat must not reach the product, such as chocolate.

Gas flushing replaces air in the pack with a gas mixture for products whose shelf life depends on it; box-motion sealing helps make the gas-tight end seals that modified-atmosphere packs need.

Capacity, Changeover and Cleaning

Packs per minute depend on the pack length, the film, the seal time and how products arrive. A product change typically means a different folding box and, if the product height changes a lot, jaw settings; pack length is a recipe setting.

Food-contact surfaces are stainless steel or food-grade plastics, with the cleaning concept defined per product and area. Moving parts are behind interlocked guards; CE documentation can be prepared according to the machine scope.

Integration With Processing and End-of-Line

Upstream, products can be fed manually or from the processing line through an automatic feeder that spaces and phases them; vision can check product position before wrapping. Downstream, packs go to checkweighing, labelling and case packing — DOKTEK can specify the whole chain.

Optional Equipment

Options
  • Gas flushing (MAP)
  • Box-motion end sealing
  • Automatic infeed and product phasing
  • Date and batch coder
  • Labeller
  • Euro-slot punch
  • Easy-open tear notch
  • Reel splicing

Options are confirmed per project for the product and the film.

Specification basis

DOKTEK FoodTech supplies horizontal flow-pack machines as configured systems: the machine, the dosing or weighing equipment, the format parts and the controls are selected for the customer's product, pack and capacity rather than sold as one fixed model.

For that reason this page publishes no speed, pack-size range, film width, machine dimension, reference installation or price. Each is stated in the quotation for the agreed configuration and can be confirmed with the customer's own product and packaging material before shipment.

What Is Confirmed Before Quotation

Packs per minute are confirmed for the agreed product, pack length, film and sealing method. No figure is quoted before those are known.

  • Product dimensions and range
  • Single or grouped packs, with or without tray
  • Film structure and print
  • Modified atmosphere required or not
  • Required packs per minute
  • How products arrive at the machine

Send Your Product and Pack

A packaging quotation starts with the product and the pack you want to sell. The more of the following you can send, the more specific the reply.

  1. 01Product and how it behaves (free-flowing, sticky, fragile, frozen, powder)
  2. 02Target pack weight or count per pack
  3. 03Pack format — photo or sample of the bag, pouch, tray or case
  4. 04Packaging material, if already chosen
  5. 05Required packs per minute or per shift
  6. 06What comes before and after the packaging machine

Frequently asked questions

Questions before a machine evaluation.

01

What is a flow-pack machine?

A horizontal machine that forms flat film into a tube around products travelling on a conveyor, seals the tube lengthwise and seals and cuts it between products — also called a flow wrapper or horizontal form fill seal (HFFS) machine.

02

What is the difference between a flow-pack machine and a vertical packaging machine?

A flow-pack machine wraps products that travel horizontally and keep their position, such as bars, vegetables or trays. A vertical machine fills loose product, dosed by weight or volume, into a bag formed around a vertical tube.

03

Can fresh vegetables be flow wrapped?

Yes — whole vegetables such as cucumbers and peppers, groups of vegetables and trays of produce are common flow-pack applications, often in a film-below configuration.

04

Can a flow-pack machine use modified atmosphere?

Gas flushing can be included; box-motion end sealing is often chosen for the gas-tight seals that modified-atmosphere packs need.

05

How fast is a flow-pack machine?

Speed depends on the pack length, the film, the sealing method and the infeed, so it is stated in the quotation for the agreed configuration.
