Multihead Weighing & Packaging Systems

A multihead weigher reaches a target pack weight by combining pieces from several weigh hoppers at once. DOKTEK FoodTech supplies multihead weighing and packaging systems — the weigher, its feeding, its platform and the packer below it — for frozen vegetables, nuts, dried fruit, snacks and fresh-cut produce.

Configuration is selected according to product, packaging format and required capacity. Machine speed, dimensions and price are stated in the quotation once the product and the pack have been reviewed.

How a Multihead Weigher Works

  1. 01

    Infeed

  2. 02

    Dispersion cone

  3. 03

    Radial feeders

  4. 04

    Pool hoppers

  5. 05

    Weigh hoppers

  6. 06

    Combination + discharge

Each weigh hopper holds a partial portion on its own load cell; the controller picks the combination of hoppers whose total is closest to the target without going under it, opens them and refills them while the next combination is chosen.

System Configuration

  1. 01

    Infeed conveyor

Incline belt or bucket elevator with level control feeding the top cone.

  2. 02

    Weigher

Heads, hopper volume and contact surfaces selected for the product and the target weight.

  3. 03

    Platform and timing hopper

Service platform with the weigher above the packer; a timing hopper releases each portion in step with the packer.

  4. 04

    Packer

Vertical form fill seal machine, premade pouch machine, or a distribution system for trays and containers.

  5. 05

    Checkweigher

Checks every pack downstream and feeds back to the weigher where needed.

  6. 06

    Controls

Product recipes, target weights and counters shared between weigher and packer.

Suitable Products

Typical multihead-weigher products

  • Frozen vegetables, fruit and IQF products
  • Nuts, seeds and dried fruit
  • Snacks, crisps and confectionery
  • Fresh-cut vegetables and salads
  • Sticky products such as dried figs or raisins (with suitable surfaces)
  • Mixes of several products (mix weighing)

Usually better with another doser

  • Powders — auger filler
  • Uniform free-flowing granules at modest speed — linear weigher or cup filler
  • Liquids — pump or piston filler

Why Combination Weighing Suits Irregular Food

A single weighing hopper filled to a target has to stop mid-flow, which is slow and inaccurate with irregular pieces. A multihead weigher avoids this: its hoppers each hold a random partial weight, and the combination closest to the target is chosen. That is why it is the standard doser for frozen vegetables, nuts and snacks, where piece weight varies.

Give-away — product above the declared weight — is the running cost a weigher is chosen to control; how low it goes depends on the product and the target weight.

Handling Sticky, Fragile and Frozen Products

Sticky products need dimpled or scraper contact surfaces or screw feeders; fragile products need reduced drop heights and gentle hoppers; frozen products need a weigher suited to cold and wet conditions. These choices are made per product, which is why DOKTEK asks for a product description or sample first.

Integration With the Packer

The weigher and the packer run as one system: the timing hopper releases each portion when the packer is ready, and the packer tells the weigher when to discharge. The vertical packaging page explains the bagger, the pouch page the premade-pouch alternative.

Upstream, DOKTEK's processing and inspection equipment can feed the weigher directly — for example cut vegetables after vision inspection.

Cleaning and Safety

Hoppers and chutes are removable without tools for cleaning; the IP protection of the weigher is chosen for the cleaning regime. Platforms have guardrails and the packer's moving parts are guarded and interlocked; CE documentation can be prepared according to the system scope.

Optional Equipment

Options
  • Mix weighing for several products
  • Dimpled or scraper contact surfaces
  • Screw feeders for sticky products
  • Timing hopper
  • Tray and container distribution
  • Checkweigher with feedback

Options are confirmed per project for the product.

Specification basis

DOKTEK FoodTech supplies multihead weighing and packaging systems as configured systems: the machine, the dosing or weighing equipment, the format parts and the controls are selected for the customer's product, pack and capacity rather than sold as one fixed model.

For that reason this page publishes no speed, pack-size range, film width, machine dimension, reference installation or price. Each is stated in the quotation for the agreed configuration and can be confirmed with the customer's own product and packaging material before shipment.

What Is Confirmed Before Quotation

Speed and accuracy are confirmed for the agreed product, target weight and configuration. No figure is quoted before those are known.

  • Product and piece-weight range
  • Target weight and tolerance
  • Sticky, fragile or frozen behaviour
  • Packer and pack format
  • Required packs per minute
  • Available height and floor space

Send Your Product and Pack

A packaging quotation starts with the product and the pack you want to sell. The more of the following you can send, the more specific the reply.

  1. 01Product and how it behaves (free-flowing, sticky, fragile, frozen, powder)
  2. 02Target pack weight or count per pack
  3. 03Pack format — photo or sample of the bag, pouch, tray or case
  4. 04Packaging material, if already chosen
  5. 05Required packs per minute or per shift
  6. 06What comes before and after the packaging machine

Frequently asked questions

Questions before a machine evaluation.

01

What is a multihead weigher?

A weigher with several weigh hoppers, each on its own load cell, that finds the combination of partial portions closest to a target weight and discharges them together into the packer below.

02

How many heads does a multihead weigher need?

The number of heads is chosen for the target weight, the required speed and the product; more heads give more combinations to choose from. It is part of the configuration stated in the quotation.

03

Can a multihead weigher handle sticky products?

Yes, with suitable contact surfaces or screw feeders — sticky products such as dried figs or raisins are weighed this way. The choice is made per product.

04

Which packing machine works with a multihead weigher?

Most often a vertical form fill seal machine directly below it; also premade pouch machines, and tray or container filling lines with a distribution system.

05

What accuracy does a multihead weigher reach?

Accuracy depends on the product's piece weight, the target weight and the configuration. It is stated for the agreed product rather than as a general figure.

Send a short video of your current process, product photos and your target output. An engineer reviews them and replies with what can be evaluated for your line, before any quotation is made.
